In a quirky twist on the traditional scavenger hunt, University of Southern Maine students will spend Sept. 7 solving campus trivia with “walkie-talkie” cell phones and sprinting through the quads in a 90-minute, campus-wide “Dash for a Cause” sponsored by U. S. Cellular.

But, the scavenger hunt isn’t just fun and games. Proceeds raised through student participation in the event will be donated to the YMCA of Greater Portland. As part of a nationwide tour at 32 universities, U.S. Cellular’s “Dash for a Cause” visits Brooks Student Center from noon to 6 p.m.

“This is a great way for students to raise funds for the YMCA of Greater Portland while brushing up on University of Southern Maine trivia, and having a lot of fun and even winning some money,” said Sherry Davenport, U. S. Cellular director of segment marketing.

The scavenger hunt will feature teams of two students competing to answer questions, and meeting a series of challenges throughout campus while using U. S. Cellular phones with SpeedTalk, a “walkie-talkie” feature that allows users to talk with up to 25 friends at once. The winning team will receive $600, and, for every student participating in the event, U. S. Cellular will donate $50 to the YMCA of Greater Portland, up to $5,000.

“We think it’s great that University of Southern Maine students will be raising money for our organization like this,” said Suzanne Wantland, YMCA of Greater Portland executive director. “We would love more than 100 students to participate to reach the maximum donation, and we will use the money raised to help support the teens’ computer lab with new, cutting-edge technology and a new color printer.”
