In 1847, the Grant & Lyon Paper Mill was erected on the northern bank of the Presumpscot River at Cumberland Mills, and this mill consisted of a small wooden building. In 1854, Samuel Dennis Warren of the paper firm of Grant, Daniel & Company of Boston purchased the Grant & Lyon Mill. Warren worked hard, and, at the time of his death in 1888, the mill had expanded to both sides of the river and encompassed many acres. This photo was taken around 1890 from the south side of the river.
