On Wednesday, Cumberland County Manager Peter Crichton terminated a Registry of Deeds employee suspected of stealing up to $5,000 from that department after refusing to cooperate with investigators.
“The suspicion of fraud and theft was revealed during a routine audit. The sheriff’s department conducted an extensive investigation and found this to be isolated to just this one employee over the last eight months. Prompt action has been taken including terminating the employee and placing safeguards to ensure this would not happen again. The case has been referred to the Attorney General’s Office for further investigation,” Crichton said.
