Inmates from the Maine Correctional Center prepare to nail clapboard to the back of the old Windham Circulating Library next to the Windham Historical Society off Windham Center Road. For the past two weeks, a work force made up of minimal custody inmates, has been renovating the old building – fixing doors, roofing, painting, etc. This renovation is one of the many community service projects that “Rudy’s Crew,” supervised by Rudy Anderson, have been working on this summer. They have built a shack for the Narrow Gauge Railroad in Portland, roofed the Gorham Fire Station and painted the interior and exterior for SMART Child and Family Services on Route 115 in Windham.

Once these renovations are complete, the Windham Historical Society plans to turn the century-old building into a library once again. After the Circulatory library closed in 1972, the building was used as a “loan closet” to house medical supplies for the Windham Health Council. Now, historical books, along with the original desk, will be on display in the new library, dedicated to the memory of local historians Sidney Branson and Malcolm Barto.
