About 100 wrestlers, from kindergarten students up to adults, are expected Saturday at Scarborough High School for the Dan Tranchemontagne Memorial Summer Wrestling Tournament.
The event, in its third year, draws competitors from throughout New England, as well as several from outside the region.
Last year the tournament was named for Tranchemontagne – a math teacher at the high school, assistant wrestling coach at USM and a veteran of the conflict in Iraq – who passed away after battling cancer in May 2004 at the age of 32.
The day’s program will include a clinic starting at 8:15 a.m., with matches, four taking place simultaneously, beginning at 9:00 on a new competition mat.
All wrestlers in the K-4th grade divisions will receive medals, as will the top three finishers in other categories.
“The little kids are a riot,” said John Cole, a volunteer coach and Scarborough wrestling supporter. “We’ll also have some pretty good wrestlers.”
Cole said the goal of the tournament, which raises funds for a scholarship that goes to a local wrestler, is for the athletes “to have fun and to learn.”
“It’s a chance for kids to try new things,” he said, “to try different techniques on the mat.”
Among those practicing their moves will be participants in Scarborough’s summer rec wrestling program.
The action should wrap up around 3:00 p.m. T-shirts and food will be available at the site.
