Pending approval from the town’s school board this (July 21) evening, Ryan Hutchins will take over as head coach of the wrestling program at Scarborough High School.
Hutchins, a Spanish teacher at Westbrook High School, was an assistant for the Red Storm last season under the legendary Ted Reese.
“Hutchins has been a successful coach, and he knows the kids at Scarborough,” said Reese, who is 69. “His enthusiasm is boundless.”
A native of Portland, Hutchins wrestled for four years at Deering High School, where he won a state title in the 125 pound class as a senior. He then attended Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania and was a two-year starter there.
Hutchins taught Spanish and coached wrestling at the Salisbury School in Connecticut, where Reese said “he really brought that program back.”
Reese, a member of Maine’s Wrestling Hall of Fame, said that he enjoyed the support that Scarborough’s wrestling program receives from both the administration and the community, but that the long commute was the key factor is his decision to move on. He will assist with the program at Bonny Eagle.
