Detectives from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s office are still on the hunt for a middle-aged man who raped a Sebago female at knifepoint in the afternoon of Wednesday, July 6.

According to authorities, the assailant came out of the woods behind the victim’s house on Molly Lane around 2 p.m., jumped up onto the rear deck of the residence, held a knife to her throat and attacked her there. The victim was taken to Mercy Hospital where she was treated and later released.

The victim describes the assailant as a white male in his late 40s to early 50s with large dark-rimmed eyeglasses, grayish unkempt hair and a thin muscular build. He was last seen wearing a dark green T-shirt, blue jeans with white paint on them and white sneakers.

Authorities say the only known encounter between the victim and the assailant, prior to the crime, happened at Lampron’s Lil Mart on Route 25 in Gorham where the assailant had a “one-sided conversation” with the female in which he made sexual advances. This has led authorities to believe that the assailant may have been stalking the victim.

“Obviously, this guy was watching her,” said Captain William Rhoads of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. “With how it was perpetrated, with my experience, it’s leading me to believe that this is not the first time the guy had done this.”

An investigation into the gross sexual assault is currently underway. Detectives are canvassing the area, interviewing local residents and potential suspects and responding to tips from the public.

“We’ve got well over a hundred calls,” Rhoads said. “(The detectives) are getting a pile of information and putting the information together with the physical evidence.”

The authorities have released a composite sketch of the assailant and are asking the public to call if they have any information. The Detective Division of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office may be reached at (207)774-1444.
