The town of Gorham is considering contracting with a private company to do the town’s mowing.
The Gorham Town Council discussed grounds maintenance at the town’s parks and cemeteries last week after receiving a letter from a resident.
Howard Faulkner of Richard Road sent a letter to Town Manager David Cole about the town neglecting upkeep at the North Cemetery on Fort Hill Road. In his letter, Faulkner said the grass needed to be mowed, decaying flower baskets needed to be removed and rubbish needed to be picked up.
Town Councilor Phil Dugas said the weather had been the problem more than the lack of help. “People can’t do the work,” he said.
Burleigh Loveitt, chairman of the town council, suggested that the town consider contracting for lawn mowing services to ease an increased workload on public works in recent years. “It would take a big headache away from Mr. Burns,” he said referring to Bob Burns who is director of public works.
Town Councilor Matt Robinson, who praised public works, said he favored looking at any option that would be available in maintaining parks and cemeteries. Robinson asked for a workshop on the matter.
With an eye on next year’s budget, Loveitt said he would work with Burns and Cole on maintaining grounds in the town.
