The city has contracted with Blue Rock Industries of Westbrook to do some repairs to Brown Street this week.

Public Services Director Tom Eldridge said Blue Rock is scheduled to begin doing some paving on Brown Street starting tomorrow morning (July 14), weather permitting. Residents are asked to make sure their cars are off the street no later than 6 a.m. on that day.

The scope of the paving work this week will include the section of Brown Street, from Cumberland Street to Reserve Street. The remainder of Brown St will be scheduled to be repaved for another time later this summer or fall.

Eldridge said the work being done this week is more of a quick fix rather than a full-scale repaving project. Crews will be putting a shim coat of paving on the road to smooth out the existing surface. “It’s not a permanent repair to the road surface,” he said. “It’s paving to level out the road surface to make it easier for winter maintenance.”

While making it easier for snow removal and other winter maintenance, Eldridge said the work would also help to shore up the road to make sure it does not deteriorate to the point where it is unusable until the city can undertake a full repaving of the street. Eldridge said he expects the paving laid down this week to last for at least five years before it needs to be fixed.

A permanent repair to Brown Street will not happen for another year or two, Eldridge said. He said the delay is due to the fact that the Portland Water District is scheduled to do some work on the sewer pipes in the area and the city does not want to undertake a project to fully repave the road until the water district finishes its work. Eldridge said he was not sure when the water district would be starting work on Brown Street.

Residents with any questions regarding the Brown Street repaving project should call the Public Services Department at 854-0660.
