Lithography Exhibit

Now through the end of October you can see lithographs and sketches by native Maine artist Jean Brush Hill on display at the Windham Public Library. The artwork being shown include nine lithographs and two pencil sketches and were completed during the artist’s graduate studies program at Southern Connecticut State University as part of a Connecticut State art certification program. She has exhibited her work in various galleries and publications. Hill enjoys looking at real objects and creating images using the most simple of all tools: a pencil. The pieces on exhibit are representational and abstract images from nature.

Most of her lithograph prints were drawn on Bavarian limestone with a grease pencil. Once the drawing is completed, the surface of the stone is treated with a solution of gum Arabic and nitric acid. An oil-based ink is then rolled onto the stone’s surface and the image is printed. The whole magic of the process is that the greasy areas absorb the ink and the un-drawn and wet areas reject the ink.

Hill says, “The drawing part is what drew me to lithography. Southern Connecticut State University has the best collection of Bavarian limestone on the east coast in its printing studio.”

One drawing is a completed sketch for her first drawing on Bavarian limestone.

We hope you can stop by to see these wonderful prints and drawings. The Windham Public Library is located at 217 Windham Center Road, and is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday in the summer months.
