A man exiting the Raymond Boat Ramp on Route 302 last Saturday was hit by an oncoming vehicle causing a three-hour-long traffic tie-up on the busy road. While the toxicology report has yet to be issued, authorities report alcohol could be a factor in the accident.

Michael Sico, 29, of Poland Spring Road in Casco was exiting the boat ramp’s parking lot in a 1988 Ford pick-up truck at 1:19 p.m. and was immediately struck by an oncoming Isuzu trooper driven by Christopher Diaz, 31 of Blue Island, Illinois. The Isuzu careened off the road, landing nose first in a swampy area across the road from the boat ramp. Diaz’s air bags deployed but he received lacerations to a forearm and both hands. Diaz had a passenger, Penelope Silva, 28, of Chicago, Illinois, who received injuries to her face and chest.

Sico, the driver of the pick-up, was rushed to Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries including a skull fracture and internal injuries. Sico’s passenger, Benjamin Giles, 27, of Smith Road, Windham, suffered bumps and bruises.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office accident reconstruction team was called out immediately since injuries to the parties were reported as life threatening and also because there is a possibility of prosecution. Alcohol consumption could be a factor on the part of the driver of the pick-up, Sheriff’s Department officials report.
