A Gorham man remained in jail Tuesday on $10,000 bail after leading police on a high speed chase this weekend through Gorham, Scarborough and Buxton.

Gorham Police Officer Dean Hannon arrested Travas L. Collins, 22, of Gorham, Saturday just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Buxton, at the end of a chase that began on Gray Road in Gorham.

Police have charged him with operating under the influence, driving to endanger, habitual motor vehicle offender, two counts of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon (a car), eluding an officer, failing to stop for an officer, exceeding the speed limit by 30 miles per hour, and theft by unauthorized use of property. Police said Collins took the vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Gorham Police Chief Ronald Shepard said that speeds sometimes exceeded 80 miles per hour during the pursuit.

Initially, police attempted to stop Collins for speeding 21 miles per hour over the speed limit at 6:15 p.m. on Gray Road. Shepard said Collins was headed toward Gorham Village and refused to stop. “He took off on us,” Shepard said.

The chase continued onto New Portland Road and Brackett Road to Saco Street and then onto County Road, Route 22. Shepard said Collins pulled over when a Buxton Police officer got a cruiser ahead of him with Hannon in pursuit. Collins was arrested and taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland.

Shepard said Hannon kept other officers informed during the chase. Buxton Police Chief Jody Thomas said Gorham Police asked for assistance in Scarborough during the chase. Collins was stopped and arrested near Elwell Farms on Long Plains Road (Route 22) in Buxton, Thomas said.

Buxton officers Francis Pulsoni and Kenneth Brislin assisted in the incident.
