I would like to congratulate the winners of the recent elections for both Town Council and School Board, and thank the public for supporting the democratic process for all candidates. I have appreciated the opportunity to run for a local office, perhaps the beginning of new directions for me. This campaign has been an educational and remarkable journey for me and my family, culminating in a close finish. I can’t begin to repay the kindness that has come my way in recent weeks and months, and I feel humbled, honored and grateful for such support. Windham has great potential as it moves toward the future, and I am confident that the new and returning members of the Council and Board will approach their duty with integrity and heartfelt commitment to our town. I wish them all the best.
On a personal level, I come from a childhood in rural Maine where I attended a four-room schoolhouse, so my roots are embedded in the foundations of family and community. My mother raised four children by herself on a beginning teacher’s salary of a mere $9,000! (Fortunately, times and salaries have changed for teachers since those lean years!) My grandmother was a teaching principal and a mathematician who taught me the value of logical thinking and the thirst for knowledge, and my own children certainly know the passion I have for education and my firm belief in its capacity to change the world. I look forward to continued opportunities to contribute to our schools, through voice and action.
Sincerely,
Anita S. Charles
