The town of Scarborough will soon begin reviewing possible improvements to the Oak Hill intersection, a study slated to cost $50,000 to $60,000.

The committee will study the intersection’s existing deficiencies, problems that may arise in the future, and current and future traffic counts. It will then develop proposals to address the deficiencies and evaluate them. It also will calculate potential costs for the improvements.

The work will start this summer when traffic counts are conducted. Town Manager Ron Owens hopes to have a recommendation to the Town Council by the end of the year and wants construction to begin in the next three to five years.

The town already has received one plan of fixing the area by making a portion of Gorham Road and Black Point one-way, and building a connector road from Enterprise Drive to Black Point Road and then from Black Point Road to Route 1 connecting across the street from Hannaford Drive. This will allow through traffic to bypass the intersection.

A review committee will discuss this idea and others, Owens said, adding that the improvements are becoming necessary as the area becomes more developed. There are three major projects in the planning stages that will impact the intersection. These are the Orion Center redevelopment, the construction of a YMCA, and the construction of a 222-unit subdivision by Kerry Anderson.
