A Unity man is still in jail after being charged with gross sexual assault for allegedly raping a Standish girl last week.
Michael Asay, 28, of Bangor Road in Unity has been charged with two counts of Class A Gross Sexual Assault following a May 29 incident involving a 16-year-old girl residing on Holiday Lane off Route 25 in Standish.
Asay, according to Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, is a registered sex offender and is also classified as a violent sexual predator stemming from a 1997 conviction for unlawful sexual contact with a 12-year-old girl.
Authorities report that Asay was a friend of the girl’s family and was visiting the Holiday Lane residence when the acts occurred last week. Allegedly, Asay had sexual intercourse with the girl once in his 1991 Ford Ranger and again inside the girl’s residence. The girl, with help from her mother, reported the incident on June 2 and Asay was apprehended later that day.
Asay was on his way back to Unity when police found his vehicle broken down on the highway. Police impounded the vehicle for illegal attachment of plates and forensics searched the pick-up and found semen, hair and fibers in the truck matching Asay.
Asay is claiming the sex was consensual and told police he and the girl had intercourse in the girl’s bedroom. The girl told police both acts were non-consensual and that the second act occurred in the living room. Forensics personnel found semen in the living room, confirming the girl’s testimony.
“We have a good case as far as physical evidence,” reported Capt. William Rhoads.
The girl, a student at Bonny Eagle High School, was taken to Maine Medical Center following the incident and is currently undergoing counseling from Sexual Abuse Response Services.
Asay is being held on $200,000 surety or $50,000 cash bail.
