According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, two Lakes Region men were arrested this week for possession and distribution of marijuana.
One of the men, David Willette, 30, of 57 Pitt Road, Naples, was arrested on charges of possession of drugs, drug trafficking, and cultivation of marijuana.
During a drug bust made by seven members of the Department including detectives, deputies and a drug canine, authorities seized 3.5 pounds of marijuana packaged for sale, mushrooms, prescription medication and also unearthed marijuana plants, which were growing on Willette’s property.
“It’s nice to have the bad guys in jail,” declared Capt. William Rhoads, who took part in the bust as well. “It should help the drug situation at Lake Region High School. When you take 3.5 pounds of marijuana off the streets, that’s got to put a pinch in someone’s smoking habits.”
John Alfiero, 43, of 614 Poland Road in Casco was also arrested during last week’s operations. Alfiero, who was visiting Willette when police arrived, was caught with a pound of marijuana in a plastic container in his truck. When police followed Alfiero back home, police found another pound of marijuana in his residence as well as 71 pot plants on the property. Alfiero is charged with trafficking of marijuana.
Rhoads credits the busts to the new Drug Enforcement Agent whose sole focus is drug trafficking in the Lakes Region.
“One of the biggest reasons we’ve nabbed these guys is because we’ve got someone just to work drugs,” Rhoads said. “We’re spread so thin as it is, we needed someone to focus on drug sales in the Lakes Region. And with the backing and support of DEA, busts like this will hopefully become more commonplace.”
