Eighth-grade teachers at Cape Elizabeth Middle School unanimously chose eighth-graders Joe Wolanski and Rosie Hewitt to be recognized as this year’s Scholar Leaders.

The students were honored last week at the sixth annual Scholar Leader Banquet held at the Augusta Civic Center, sponsored by the Maine Association for Middle Level Education and the New England League of Middle Schools. The program is designed to honor two students from each middle level school in Maine who have distinguished themselves in terms of outstanding leadership and scholarship. This year 41 schools participated, recognizing the accomplishments of 82 students.

Students are chosen on a set of criteria, which includes having an excellent attitude towards learning, providing service to classmates and school, being a positive role model for peers and taking responsibility for their own behavior and learning.

Eighth grade team leader Mary Murphy said Wolanski and Hewitt both consistently demonstrate these characteristics. Both students are band members and athletes who Murphy said show exemplary sportsmanship both on and off the field. Both also do additional community service, Murphy said.

“They are thoughtful, reliable, dependable and an asset to the school and the community,” Murphy said.
