Though the wet weather has continued unabated, Cape Elizabeth Public Works Director Bob Malley said the gift shop and museum at Portland Head Light would be opened by the weekend.
Town Manager Mike McGovern said there was still painting to be done on the Keeper’s Quarters and Gift Shop, but the tower work is complete. While the gift shop and museum will be open, the area around the tower will still be off-limits.
“We have a lot of student groups coming in,” said McGovern. “What we’ll do is barricade off the back side.”
The landscape work that is part of the restoration, including an extension of the Cliff Walk, is about 85 percent done, Malley said.
Regardless, the rain definitely slowed the whole process down. “The weather is killing us,” Malley said. “The tower work would have been done last week.”
The irony, McGovern said, was that the one thing getting done is the underground sprinkler system, “the one thing we don’t need right now.” Though the weather slowed down the process the project is still on budget, according to McGovern.
The entire project will be wrapped up in the next couple of weeks, Malley said, weather permitting.
