At a colorfully painted side window of Two Lights General Store beach-goers and residents will soon be able to enjoy a cone of soft-serve butter pecan, a milkshake or a shot of espresso.
Mary Page, owner of Two Lights General Store along with her husband Ron, has started the side business after three years running the general store.
She said they have been thinking about the ice cream stand for about a year now, as “an extension of an already fun place.” The grand opening was rained out this past weekend, and has not yet been rescheduled.
She said she may need to hire more staff if the ice cream takes off. During the summer months thousands of people pass the store on their way to Crescent Beach or Two Lights State Park.
Red’s Dairy Freeze in South Portland is good, but far enough away, Page said. Kettle Cove Dairy Bar is just down the road a bit, but she said they are selling different things.
Page said she didn’t want to step on any toes, but there is plenty of demand in the area. “There’s plenty of it to go around … we’re just filling a need,” she said. “If you make it, they will come.”
Kettle Cove Take-out and Dairy Bar has been owned and managed by Pat and Fran Cook for the past 12 years. Fran Cook said they usually open in late April and would be opening “very soon.”
Cook said that he was not concerned with competition as a result of Two Licks ice cream because they will only sell soft-serve. Kettle Cove does have soft-serve, but Cook said the primary reason people come to him is for his homemade hard-pack ice cream.
