SPHS library book swap

The South Portland High School library is holding a book swap from May 16 to 20, and is now accepting donations of books that are of interest to and appropriate for high school students.

Art show opens May 31

The South Portland schools’ district-wide art show will be held at the South Portland Community Center from May 31 to June 3, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon on Friday. The displays will include work from the art departments, quilts from the high school home economics classes and music from music students. There will be an opening on Tuesday, May 31, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Project Graduation needs parents

Project Graduation is still looking for parents to help plan the graduation night events for the SPHS class of 2005. The last two meetings of the year are on Wednesday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library. Parents who cannot attend but would like to help should contact Nancy Carroll at carrolna@spsd.org or at 767-3266 ext. 222.

A fund-raiser pasta fest will be held on Thursday, May 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the high school cafeteria. Senior citizens and students cost $4, and adults cost $6.

Also, Willow’s Restaurant at 1422 Broadway will hold its last fund-raiser of the school year for Project Graduation on Monday, May 9. The restaurant is giving 15 percent of all sales after 4 p.m. (dine-in and takeout) to the effort.

Robotics Team places second

The 24-member South Portland High School Robotics Team placed second out of 51 teams at the March 2005 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) regional competition held in Manchester, N.H. Tetra-Conductor, the robot, was the creation of the students, their coach Jon Meade, engineers from team sponsor Fairchild Conductor, as well as interested parents. Also, the team Web site www.riotcrew.org was awarded first place among all team Web sites. Team members include: Scott Brown, Mike Carter, Emma Dalton, Nick DeHaas, Xibei Ding, Justin Gorham, Sarah Gray, Sam Helmke, Kyle Hemes, Joe Henningson, Chris Hoy, Jason Hoy, Brian Janson, Mellisa Kierman, David Knowland, Andy Legere, Brendan McKay, Mike Morris, Larry Page, Nate Plourde, Jamie Reinhold, Max Trifan and Ryan Williams. Teacher advisors are Ralph Newell and Beth Gwozdz.

60 inducted into Modern and Classical Languages Honor Society

More than 60 students at SPHS participated in the Modern and Classical Languages Honor Society induction ceremony held March 15.

Students studying American Sign Language, French, Latin and Spanish were recognized for their superior achievement in language study. Academic honors in American Sign Language were awarded to: Kathryn Card, Amanda Card, Christina Valeriani, Kelly Boudreau, Cassandra Miller, Alycia Henningsen and Manica Hing.

Academic honors in French were awarded to: Kelsey Champagne, Francis Huynh, Emily McKinnon, Sarah Gray, Carly Cummings, Laurel Snyder, Alison Gerrish, Emma Dalton, Emily Haeuser, Emily Igo, Henry Keiter and Michelle Morton. Two-year membership awards in French were given to: Abby Levis, Amanda Card, Ashley McOsker, Jeanna Petillo, Shana Kiernan and Sacha Wilson.

Latin inductees were: Jennifer Gillies, Gabrielle Grant, Mellissa Kierman, Brittany LaVigne, Halie Lyons, Ryan Michaud and Daniel Max Trifan. Two-year membership awards were given to: Benjamin Carter, Meaghan Levangie and Seth Jacobson.

Spanish inductees were: David Arnold, Robert Chiamulera, Christian Heide, Deena Kimball, Jon Swiger, Chad Ayotte, Taylor Burgdorf, Lauren Duranleau, Ann Grazewski, Adam Lewandowski, Chelsea Pettengill, Jess Reed, Kelly Schussler, Mariemill Giordano, Joshua Viola and,Amanda Shannon. Second-year membership awards were given to: Allison Taylor, Casey Doucette, Amy Foss, Tim Cahill, Lynne Powers, Dillon Bonner, Hannah Dunphy, Meaghan Levangie, Eric Giddings and Cole Rosengren.

Four honored for Latin

Four Latin students at South Portland High School, Christina Johns, Aleksander Petrovic, Emilio Rodriguez and George Murray, were each awarded “cum laude” honors for their scores on the National Latin Exam administered in March. More than 135,000 students from all 50 US states and 14 foreign countries took the test.

Key Club news

On Saturday, May 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Key Club will hold a yard sale at the school, involving many of the school’s clubs, sports teams and members of the community.

On Tuesday, May 17, the Key Club will be holding its end of the year banquet in the high school library from 6 to 8 p.m. The banquet will acknowledge the current members of Key Club, and a check for $1,500 will be presented to Camp Sunshine. There will be refreshments, and all are welcome to come.
