A search committee announced Wednesday that they had chosen Steven Connolly, currently the assistant principal of Portland High School, as the next principal of Cape Elizabeth Middle School.

Connolly is not unfamiliar with the middle school – he was a science teacher at the school for 13 years. He left to pursue his career in school administration nine years ago.

The other finalist for the position, Dennis Duquette, the principal of Gorham Middle School, withdrew his application for consideration last week.

When Interim Superintendent Bob Lyman returned from April vacation he received a letter informing him of Duquette’s decision. He said Duquette cited overwhelming support for him to stay at Gorham for his decision.

Lyman said the search committee met to discuss whether they be looking further, but that the consensus was Connolly would be a fine choice.

“The feeling was that we had a candidate that would be a very good, if not exceptional, principal at the middle school,” said Lyman.

Connolly will now meet with Superintendent-elect Alan Hawkins before his nomination will go before the School Board on May 10.
