The Scarborough Community Chamber will observe National Small Business Week, April 24-30 with a display of information and products from a cross-section of the Scarborough business community. Co-sponsors of the event are the Scarborough Economic Development Corporation and the Scarborough Public Library.
This is the eighth year the Chamber has organized the event to recognize the important role that small business play in the economic health of the community and its citizens. The enthusiasm from the business community has made this an annual event.
National Small Business Week is the creation of the U. S. Small Business Administration and has been observed since 1963. According to the SBA, the week “honors the estimated 25 million small business owners that helped to drive the nation’s economy. Small businesses employ more than half the country’s private work force, create three of every four new jobs and gencrate a majority of American innovations”.
The display’s location in the center of the busy public library provides hundreds of people an opportunity to look at the products and gather promotional materials. Some businesses use the opportunity for educational outreach by offering materials on safety, health, or environmental awareness. Participation is open to any business in Scarborough.
Businesses interested in participating in the display should contact Nancy Crowell of Scarborough Public Library, 883-4723 or Loretta Meserve at SEDCO, 883-4893. The deadline for applications is April 15.
