The Scarborough Board of Education gave preliminary approval to reinstating a policy that would allow the district to dictate where school buses will pick up and drop off students.
Currently there is no bus stop policy, which has led to town buses making hundreds of stops on the way to and from school. The new policy will allow the district to develop centralized bus stops for students who live nearby each other.
The new policy would only affect some areas of town. For example, there will not be a single bus stop on Route 1 because of the traffic, but there could be one at some of the town’s subdivisions, which would stop a bus from driving through them and the students will still remain safe, according to school officials who discussed the issue at school board meeting last week.
The district would like to pilot the program this spring so all of the bugs can be worked out before the fall. There was a policy at one point, but in 2002 it was removed because it was believed that it was unnecessary.
