Second grade students at Raymond Elementary School enjoyed a tour of Hancock Lumber’s Ryefield Mill facility on Route 11 in Casco last Friday. The students have been learning about “product” lately and last week’s tour focused on key words including consumer, manufacturing and product. Once the kids were finished with the tour, Hancock representatives gave each student a piece of wood that the students will turn into something saleable. Once complete, parents will then be invited to purchase the finished projects at an upcoming academic fair. To complete the consumer cycle, all proceeds raised from the sale of the 70 projects will go back to Hancock to purchase seedlings.

“It’s really the consumer cycle they’re learning here,” said Penny Wahlstrom, second grade teacher and field trip organizer. “We educate them with words back in the classroom and then we came out here and showed them a manufacturing facility that takes raw materials and turns it into a consumer product. It was a great opportunity for them to learn.” Staff photo by John Balentine
