The Student World Assembly chapter at South Portland High School is the first such high school chapter to be established in the world. Their big “kickoff” event will be held Wednesday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Entitled “Global Perspectives on Women and HIV/AIDS,” it will include a panel of three experts with international experience who will address one of the world’s most pressing issues.

The panelists will be Julia McDonald, executive director of the Maine AIDS Alliance, Shelley White, Maine State HIV Care, and Noel Bonam, manager of the HIV/STD program for Portland’s Health and Human Services Department. The panel will also include introductions about SWA from its officers, and a reception will follow.

SWA members represent over 250 colleges and universities in over 100 countries. The members of SWA have elected the AIDS Crisis as the most important pressing global issue the world faces today.

The panel at South Portland High School coincides with events happening in New York City, Canada and Africa that will address the issue of HIV/AIDS.
