South Portland High School senior Jeana Petillo is the recipient of the Maine Principal’s Association Principal’s Award and will be honored along with winners from other communities at an annual luncheon in Bangor on April 2.
A Principal’s Award is given to a graduating senior every year by principals in every school system. The selection criteria are a student’s academic record, school citizenship, accomplishments in community service and co-curricular activities.
“It was flattering,” said Petilloof receiving the award.
South Portland Principal Jeanne Crocker said she choose Petillo because she is an outstanding student and an “all around high-achieving young woman in all senses of the word.”
Petillo is the president of her class and of the High School Student Senate/House of Representatives, a co-founder of the High School’s Amnesty International chapter and a member of the National Honor Society. She enjoys photography, the outdoors and snowboarding.
“Jeana is the unmistakable leader of the senior class and the school,” said Crocker.
Next year Petillo will attend the University of Maine at Farmington to study secondary education, a step towards her goal of becoming a high school English teacher.
